Water and Liver Function

Importance of the Liver Process

The liver is one of the most important and necessary organs in the body. Protected by the rib cage and weighing about three pounds, it has two sections; the right and left lobes. The gallbladder is under the liver along with parts of the pancreas and the intestines. The liver plays an important role in assisting digestion, absorption, and processing of food. But it also has another key function; it filters blood coming from the digestive tract before distributing it to the body. Not only does the liver secrete bile that goes back into the intestines it also makes proteins for blot clotting and it has other functions.

How does water affect liver function? If you don’t drink enough water, the toxins will build up in the body which can hinder kidney, liver, and bowel function. The blood is made up mostly of water and since the liver filters the blood, its viscosity will affect and influence the liver’s detoxification abilities. Thick blood is a result of not drinking enough water making it more difficult for the liver to filter.

Drinking adequate water keeps the hydration levels up which also helps the liver with detoxification. But this process will begin to malfunction during dehydration. Furthermore, when someone is dehydrated, organs will take extra water from the blood causing other problems. Accumulations of toxins in the body will make the dehydrated person feel unwell. Here are some of the effects and conditions which are a result of not drinking enough water: Dehydration; body temperature; chemical imbalance; constipation and digestive problems; stomach; joint pain; reductions in muscle mass; long periods of illness due to a build-up of toxins; hunger pangs; and premature aging. If you’re cleansing, the liver plays an important role in determining the result of the cleanse but you don’t have to spend a lot of money on cleansing kits. According to naturalhealthezine.com, lemon and water help to cleanse the liver quite well, flushing out toxins that are about to be absorbed in your body. Not only does the water flush out the tissues of the liver as stated in another Livestrong article What Are the Benefits of Water on Liver Detoxification? but water also assists the kidneys during liver detoxing by filtering waste products.

Activebeat is another website which lists the benefits of ingesting lemon water. In the article 10 Reasons To Wake Up To Lemon Water, shares the 10 top reasons why lemon water should be taken during the day. The 10 top reasons include: Promotes healthy hydration; glowing skin; enhances immunity; diminishes inflammation; antibacterial and antiviral benefits; enhances digestion; put on your smarty pants; thwarts UTIs; cancer fighter; naturally freshens breath. Dr. Josh Axe, a certified doctor of natural medicine, doctor of chiropractic and clinical nutritionist, has a passion to help people get healthy. His functional medicine center in Nashville became one of the most renowned clinics in the world. Dr. Axe claims that “every person’s health and well-being is dependent on how their body removes and purges toxins from the body. The liver is one of the hardest working organs in the body because it not only detoxifies but produces the bile needed to digest fat, break down hormones, and store essential vitamins, minerals and iron.” When the liver is not functioning properly, food cannot be digested well, especially fats. Check out his advice here. This is why diet, adequate water intake, and other factors are necessary to keep the liver at its optimum so that it can detox properly.

In The Guardian, a contrary view to detoxing the liver is explained with a skepticism. The article You can’t detox your body. It’s a myth. So how do you get healthy?debunks the whole “detoxing” movement. The claim on this side of the argument is: “In medical terms, it’s a nonsense. Diet and exercise is the only way to get healthy.” Plus, if toxins did build up in your body and you couldn’t excrete them, you’d be in need of medical intervention. The reasoning for this is simple explains Edzard Ernst, emeritus professor of complementary medicine at Exeter University. “The healthy body has kidneys, a liver, skin, even lungs that are detoxifying as we speak,” he says. “There is no known way – certainly not through detox treatments – to make something that works perfectly well in a healthy body work better.”

Whether you believe in detoxing or not, one fact is certain. Diet and exercise play an important role in keeping the liver healthy, and water is a key ingredient that assists in the process. In How Does Your Liver Function to Cleanse and Detox Naturally, a representative from the Santosa Detox and Wellness Center explains that taking care of your liver is not as difficult as you might think. “The best things that you can do for your liver are to avoid alcohol, drink plenty of water, eat whole foods including healthy grains and plants, exercise and spend time in the sunshine as much as you can. Get plenty of rest and don’t smoke.” It’s a simple solution for an amazing natural detoxing and cleansing process which involves the liver.
